Olivier Richon, whose still lifes borrow heavily from classical conventions. These are images steeped in allegory and clever art history references, but they wear their meaning lightly.
Bald Eagle by Ryan McGinley caught our eye. Its one of the more tame images from his 2012 Animals series and combines his trademark nudity and sense of colour and composition with a canny humour.
Vik Muniz’s Humming Bird is stunning; its an image of a collage made from pieces of scrap metal, and is a wonderful example of how the most utilitarian off-cuts can become something beautiful.
We did our first Lumitrix Loves blog post about Desiree Dolron, and she has work from her Xteriors series represented in all their haunting and other-wordly beauty.
Another work which references Flemish Old Masters is this image from the Korean artist Bae Joon Sung’s The Costume of Painter series, whose technically demanding and multi-layered works subvert grandiose Western subjects.
Finally, to round off our Old Masters theme on an uplifting note, here is Andreas Muhe’s Adonis - a nod to Friedrich’s Wanderer.
