At Lumitrix we love an aesthete. Sara Thompson, the highly acclaimed Northern Irish interior designer, is blessed with a spectacular eye. One half of Thompson-Clarke, a successful design business based in Belfast, Sara was an early supporter of Lumitrix, buying both Tommy Clarke’s ‘Boats’ and Holly Wilmeth’s ‘Blue Morpho’ to furnish her own home with.

One might be satisfied with building up a business that continues to go from strength to strength, but a brief précis of Sara’s last ten years would also include having three children, building her dream home from scratch, and successfully housing three generations of their family under one roof. It’s quite a roll call of achievements, and Sara admits, “Starting my own business and building a new home, whilst having three children under the age of four was fairly full on.”

Were you always interested in design?

When I look back at my childhood and earlier studies the writing was always on the wall. I fondly recall asking my mum if I could change my room around, school holiday after school holiday, and always playing houses with my sisters. When it came to Christmas I was in charge of decorating the whole house, and became obsessed with every detail.

How would you describe your style?

Timeless and uplifting. I love colour and pattern but know how tying they can be to schemes, so we aim to balance these elements with classic tones and designs throughout. We always say, “Nothing should match, beautiful things always go together,” so we try not to be too perfect in our schemes.

Do you have any rules when it comes to putting together a room?

Listen to the client. Yes they want your ideas and vision, but they also want it to be a reflection of their own tastes as well as how they live. We spend lots of time getting to know our clients so we don’t fail here. Then it’s about balance and not being boring or predictable.

Like most interior designers I do like the odd cushion (!) and love to mix and match different styles and textures. My favourites have to be my Lidby Living ikat patterned cushions which we sell online in all sorts of colourways, along with the beautifully hand-woven Jude Cassidy cushion collection which we have just launched together – the soft palette of dusty rose and mint combined with the rich textures are so luxurious to sink into at the end of a long day.

Which Lumitrix piece do you have your eye on?

My next purchase would have to be an Oliver Perrott large-scale moody landscape, Cuckmere Haven I’ but I also love the moonlit ‘Magdalene Fjord, 2010’ by Leonid Tishkov.
