Banoo Batliboi

These hazy layers and enigmatic forms have been made by the artist taking images of her book sculpture, and then overlapping them together. If you look closely, you can see Hindi text within the layers.

Preferred Camera

Rudimentary snapshot cameras, sometimes even an iPhone!

Quick Questions

Style?

Enigmatic forms that intrigue.

Inspiration?

My book sculptures. Old books that I re-imagine into a new form.

Describe your design process?

The first part of the process is in designing the subject of the photograph – the folded pages of the book. And the second part is playing with images, superimposing them to creating sheer layers of confusion and complexity.

What type of lighting do you use?

A certain slant of natural light makes the magic happen.

Who are your artistic heroes?

Cara Barer takes my breath away. She creates clean dramatic images of her amazing book sculptures.

Favourite part of your job?

It’s not a job. I do what I want, when I want and only if I want to. That’s my favourite part!

Best advice?

Perfection is the enemy of creativity.

Where do you live? What do you love about it?

I live in Bombay, India. I love that it has a space for so many people doing all sorts of things - ranging from the truly sublime to the self-absorbed and ridiculous!

Where did you grow up?

I grew up in Bombay in an environment of love, security and stability. I was a good girl who had no reason to rebel. I feel like I was cheated out of a vital rite of passage!

Are you artistic in other ways- can you draw?

I’m just ‘crafty’ and like to make things with my hands. I like to think critically and challenge conventional wisdom.

What is your favourite season?

Bombay’s winter - It can go as far down as 16 degrees!

And your secret ambition?

To live and work in an academic environment doing research in Cognitive Psychology.
