Moon Ice, 2010

Leonid Tishkov

A moon shines with quiet beauty on an iceberg. Moon Ice was shot by Leonid in the Arctic as part of his ongoing poem about a man who met the moon and stayed with her forever. Leonid is never separated from his illuminated moon and they have travelled the world together for more than ten years.

Moon Ice

Our Suggestion:

Looks great paired with another one of Leonid's fabulous moon series.

Quick Questions

What type of lighting do you use?

I only use the electric light from my Private Moon, and then shoot it in a natural environment at nightime.

Describe your design process?

I first choose a location and take a preliminary photo of it. Then I try to imagine how to make the location as meaningful and poetic as possible before drawing sketches of how it will look with my moon in situ. Finally I sit and wait for the right weather conditions.

Tell us more about your Arctic images featured on Lumitrix?

I took part in an international expedition in September 2010, together with a group of scientists, writers, musicians and painters. We sailed around Svalbard and Spitsbergen and then north to the Arctic ice edge. Our aim was to raise public awareness for global warming and the fragility of this polar landscape. I wanted to show a beautiful arctic world, where magical things can happen.

What is in your dream fine art photographic collection?

Metaphysical photographs...

What advice would you give younger photographers?

Read and love poetry!

Secret ambition?

 To be a kid again.
