Kate Holstein's ethereal, minimalist work is inspired by nature, light and adventure. It develops from an organic process- Kate carries a camera with her wherever she goes, in case of a picture perfect moment. Her favourite photographs are unplanned, when beauty simply manifests itself. Kate lives and works in Aspen, Colorado, after growing up in Boulder.

What did you use to photograph these images?

Phase One IQ250, 55mm Nikon D800e, Hensel Porty 1200, 24-70mm, 70-200mm

Where were you first published?

I photographed Richard Branson for the cover of Origin Magazine. It was a bit of a spontaneous thing- right place, right time- but that was my first major published piece outside of the wedding photography world.

What work are you most proud of?

That my “work”- as in all of it- is what I love. That’s by far what matters most to me.

What advice would you give to younger photographers?

Shoot with your heart, not with your eyes. It’s really true that if you follow what speaks to your heart, and shoot what really matters to you, then great things will follow.

What is a good life?

A simple life, and one that is filled with family, friends, great food and time. I think being present and enjoying the ride of life ensures that it is a good one.

Worst moment?

Accidentally deleting a 32 GB card full of wedding images before I had downloaded them! (I recovered them in the end).

Are you artistic in other ways?

I do a lot of interior design as well as photography.

Best party you’ve ever been to?

My wedding

What excites you?

The possibility of beauty in each day.

What are your favourite things to do on a Sunday?

Go outside with my husband, family or friends, followed by a great long meal together.

What did you use to photograph the images submitted to Lumitrix?

I always use prime (fixed) lenses because, in my experience, zoom lenses compromise quality. I only shoot in natural light- amazing light can make anything beautiful. In terms of accessories, I like to keep it streamlined. I rarely use more than 100mm and 50mm lenses.

Who are your artistic heros?

In the photography world: Paolo Roversi, Henri Cartier-Bresson and Dita Isager. I also draw a lot of inspiration from art beyond photography. Nature is probably my #1 nature and hero.
