Juliette Charvet Location

Juliette Charvet, a French-born photographer living in Brooklyn, New York, is known for her wide and unlimited landscapes focusing on the concept of frontiers. Her distinctive approach to framing offers alternative ways of looking at views we might otherwise take for granted, and has won her numerous prizes, including the International Colour Award in 2017, the International Photography Award in 2012, Photo District News, World in Focus and the Planet Photo Contest in 2011. She has been exhibited in Paris and New York.

I don’t mind, as long as it is not too heavy and can generate high resolution photographs. I mostly use a 35mm for both digital and film, and I particularly like Nikon cameras.

Where do you live? What do you love about it?

I live in Brooklyn and I love the energy and people of New York.

How did your photographic career begin?

I have always wanted to catch and frame certain moments, faces, looks and situations. It’s when I travelled to the US for the first time as a teenager, that I first realized that photography could allow me to take a step back and a certain distance with reality. By taking a picture I could literally “freeze” my surroundings.

What work are you most proud of?

Probably the photos I haven’t taken yet.

What advice would you give younger photographers?

Take your time, there is no rush! It is not about the result, it is about the journey…Enjoy every bit of it, keep trying, keep shooting, keep loving it. And stick to your projects, for a long time.


Everything from people/friends/nature/books/art/travels/food inspire me I guess…

Favourite part of your job?

To get to travel and discover the world.

Biggest challenge?

To be able do my job and raise my 3 little girls under 4 years old at the same time…balance is an everyday challenge!

Describe the best party you have ever been to.

A lot of friends, a lot of champagne, a lot of good food, a lot of music, in an old house in Italy...heaven!

What do you want to accomplish that you haven’t already?

Movement, newness, adventure, meeting people, discovering the world.

What angers you?

Injustice of any kind.
