Elina RukaRiga, LatviaInspired by one of the most powerful forces in nature, Elina Ruka’s fine art photography is a reflection of fear blended with fascination. Her own personal apprehension at being exposed to the power of the ocean translates into a curiosity about the duality of being both pulled in and pushed away by forces beyond our control — but not beyond our understanding.
From digital to film, underwater to gopro.
This shot is a fictional concept by Latvian photographer Elina Ruka, depicting a literal stripping away of layers to see what lies beneath. Note the darker outside layer, appearing to represent a more intimidating and foreboding vision of the ocean. The transition from that exterior image to two progressively lighter shades is yet another expression of Elina’s inspiration: seeing beneath immediate observations and understanding both the sea — and each other — with depth.
